Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD “In addition to treating various health conditions, IV vitamin therapy is also used to promote general well-being, enhance energy and performance and diminish the effects of aging at the cellular level”.

Let’s face it: in our busy, overscheduled and stress-filled lives, few of us eat the way we should. Lack of time translates into diets that are often lacking in essential vitamins and minerals. We also don’t get as much rest as we should. The consequence of eating poorly and pushing ourselves to the limits is deficiency of essential nutrients, lack of energy and generalized fatigue.

What is IV vitamin therapy?

IV vitamin therapy involves the administration of essential vitamins and minerals in concentrations that are high enough to:

  • repair damage at the cellular level
  • boost energy
  • regenerate cells
  • replenish diminished stores of essential nutrients

Why can’t I take a vitamin by mouth?

You can take vitamins and minerals orally. Many people take a daily vitamin pill. The advantage of IV vitamin therapy is that it bypasses the gastrointestinal tract, delivering the necessary vitamins and minerals directly and efficiently into the bloodstream so that they can be rapidly delivered to where they are most needed. This method of nutrient delivery can help you to feel better much more quickly and is especially advantageous for individuals who have specific health issues.

Is IV vitamin therapy “one size fits all”?

No. When you come in to see me, I will order blood tests to determine what vitamins and minerals you are (or are not) deficient in. Based on the results of your blood tests, we formulate your IV vitamin treatment according to your personal needs.

What vitamins and minerals might be included in IV vitamin therapy?

Again, IV therapy is based on your personal needs. The following are some of the common nutrients that people are often deficient in:

  • Vitamin C– vitamin C is an important co-factor in at least 8 cellular processes crucial for growth and repair of cartilage, bone and teeth. It is also important for wound healing. Deficiency of vitamin C may cause anemia, increased susceptibility to infection, increased bleeding tendency, rough and scaly skin, dry/split hair and poor wound healing.
  • B vitamins– the B-complex vitamins help your body to create energy from the food you eat. They regulate the functioning of your nervous system and help the body make red blood cells. Thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), cyanocobalamin (B12) and folate (B9) are the B vitamins that people are most often deficient in. Symptoms of deficiency may include nervous system dysfunction, cognitive issues (i.e., memory and concentration difficulties), anemia, cracked/sore tongue and lips, and birth defects (folic acid).
  • Selenium– selenium is important to heart health and works by increasing the action of antioxidants. Deficiency has been linked to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and increased risk of stroke.
  • Magnesium– magnesium is necessary for over 300 biochemical processes in the body. It regulates nerve and muscle function, keeps the heart beating regularly, supports healthy functioning of the immune system, promotes strong bones and regulates blood sugar, protein synthesis and energy metabolism. Deficiency may cause weakness, lack of energy, numbness and tingling in the extremities, muscle cramps, electrolyte imbalance (low potassium level) and abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Calcium– calcium supports the structure and function of teeth and bones; in addition, it is needed for nerve transmission, hormonal secretion and blood vessel and muscle functioning. Prolonged deficiency results in weakened bones that may fracture easily, as well as muscle cramps, seizures and abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Amino acids– amino acids are the ‘building blocks’ of protein. They are necessary for growth and repair. Deficiency may cause fatigue, poor wound healing, swelling of the extremities and frequent infections.

Will IV vitamin therapy cure my condition?

No. IV vitamin therapy is not a cure for any condition (unless the condition is deficiency itself). However, individuals with many different conditions can benefit from vitamin therapy in terms of decreased symptoms, increased energy and enhanced well-being. IV vitamin therapy is aimed at addressing three main issues:

  • increased demands of the body (i.e., post-surgery, illness, chronic wounds, avoidance of illness)
  • reduced gastrointestinal absorption (i.e., ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, pernicious anemia)
  • lack of proper nutrition (i.e., lifestyle, poor appetite due to illness)

Is IV vitamin therapy covered by insurance?

Individual insurance plans vary. If you have a documented deficiency, your health insurance may cover the cost of therapy partially or fully.

IV vitamin therapy has improved the lives of patients suffering from depression, migraines, immune disorders, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, allergies, asthma and a host of other conditions. Many patients find that with regular treatments they feel more energetic, are able to accomplish more, look and feel younger and experience fewer colds and other illnesses.
