Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MDAlthough men tend to visit the doctor less often than women do, men’s health should not be ignored. Doing so may mean that you won’t find out there is an issue with your health until it is too late. Think of your health in terms of a car: in order to keep your car running smoothly, you take your car into the shop to rotate the tires and change the oil on a regular basis. Men’s health care is important in terms of maintaining your body in good running condition”.

-Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD

As a man, you may suffer from many of the same health problems as women, but you may experience symptoms differently; treatment may also be different. You may experience both acute or chronic illnesses. Some conditions are unique to men, such as prostate problems and cancer of the male reproductive organs. As you age, you may be concerned about maintaining wellness, the effects of aging on your body, prostate health and changing levels of energy and mood.

The following is a list of health problems affecting men which I can help to diagnose and treat:

  • arthritis– arthritis can affect virtually any joint in the body and is more common with age
  • back pain/joint problems– back pain and/or joint problems may be caused by acute injury or a chronic disease process such as arthritis
  • nervous system/brain disorders– Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and dementia affect older men, while headaches, seizures, pain and numbness/tingling of the extremities may affect men of any age
  • cancer– certain cancers, such as testicular and prostate cancer, affect only men. Men may also develop cancer elsewhere in the body
  • digestive problems– ulcers, heartburn and bowel issues such as constipation can affect men of any age
  • mental health– depression is common in men, although men may be more reluctant to admit that they are depressed. Depression is a highly treatable condition
  • heart health– symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations (sensation of the heart racing or skipping), swelling of the legs and feet and chest pain should be assessed immediately by your physician, as they may be a sign of serious heart problems
  • sleep disorders– sleep apnea and insomnia are common sleep disorders in men
  • thyroid disease– thyroid disease can cause a wide variety of symptoms, depending on whether the thyroid gland is producing too much or too little hormone
  • high blood pressure– high blood pressure is known as “the silent killer” because it rarely causes symptoms. Management of blood pressure is important in prevention of heart attack and stroke
  • high cholesterol– cholesterol can be managed by a combination of diet, exercise and medication when necessary
  • diabetes– proper management of diabetes is important to avoid complications of this disease, such as vision loss and renal failure
  • prostate cancer screening– most men don’t think much about the health of their prostate until it causes problems. As men age, the prostate grows. Sometimes the prostate grows large enough to exert pressure on the urethra. Enlargement of the prostate is known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Cancer of the prostate gland can cause many of the same symptoms as BPH, making it difficult to differentiate between the two. One way of detecting prostate cancer is to do a blood test called a PSA test.

If you are one of those men who don’t visit the doctor until and unless you are very sick, you may want to rethink your health strategy! Seeing me regularly can help identify health issues before they cause a major problem. If it’s been too long since your last doctor’s visit, I strongly encourage you to make an appointment to come and see me in the clinic.
