Bursa Injections

“Bursa injections are a minimally invasive treatment used to reduce inflammation and pain in the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion joints. By delivering medication directly to the affected area, this approach can help relieve discomfort, improve mobility, and support function in conditions involving the hip, shoulder, or other joints. As part of a comprehensive musculoskeletal care plan, bursa injections may be combined with rehabilitation and other interventional procedures to optimize outcomes.”
-Dr. Anatoly Pisman, MD
What are Bursa Injections?
Bursa injections involve administering medication—typically a corticosteroid and local anesthetic—directly into an inflamed bursa. Bursa are small sacs that reduce friction between bones, tendons, and muscles near joints.
When a bursa becomes inflamed (a condition known as bursitis), it can cause pain, swelling, and restricted movement. Bursa injections help reduce this inflammation and provide targeted relief.
These injections are often part of a broader joint and soft tissue care approach for managing musculoskeletal pain.
Conditions Treated
Bursa injections are commonly used to treat bursitis and related inflammatory conditions affecting major joints.
- Hip bursitis (trochanteric bursitis)
- Shoulder bursitis (subacromial bursitis)
- Elbow bursitis (olecranon bursitis)
- Knee bursitis (prepatellar bursitis)
- Pain related to repetitive strain or overuse injuries
In some cases, bursitis may coexist with conditions such as tendon irritation, impingement syndromes, or other joint disorders that may also be evaluated alongside facet joint injections or other interventional options depending on the source of pain.
How Bursa Injections Work
The procedure involves identifying the inflamed bursa and injecting medication directly into the affected area. Imaging guidance such as ultrasound may be used to improve accuracy, especially for deeper joints like the hip or shoulder.
The corticosteroid reduces inflammation, while the anesthetic provides immediate, temporary pain relief. Over time, this can allow improved movement and participation in rehabilitation exercises.
When Bursa Injections Are Recommended
Bursa injections are typically recommended when:
- Pain and inflammation persist despite conservative treatments
- Physical therapy and rest have not provided sufficient relief
- Symptoms are interfering with mobility or daily activities
- Imaging or clinical evaluation confirms bursitis as the source of pain
They may be used in conjunction with other treatments such as trigger point injections when muscle tightness is also contributing to discomfort.
What to Expect After the Procedure
After the injection, patients may experience mild soreness at the injection site for a short period. Relief from inflammation may begin within a few days, with full effects developing over time.
Patients are generally advised to avoid strenuous activity for a short period and may be guided through rehabilitation or stretching exercises to support recovery and prevent recurrence.
Benefits of Bursa Injections
Bursa injections offer a targeted, non-surgical approach to managing joint inflammation and pain.
Key benefits:
- Direct reduction of localized inflammation
- Improved joint mobility and function
- Minimally invasive with no surgical recovery
- Can support participation in physical therapy
- Provides targeted relief when conservative care is insufficient
What to Expect at Your Visit
During your evaluation, your symptoms, medical history, and physical examination findings will be reviewed to determine if bursitis is the source of your pain. A personalized treatment plan will be developed, which may include bursa injections along with other diagnostic or therapeutic options as part of a comprehensive musculoskeletal care strategy.
