Sciatica Treatment

“Posture and tech neck syndrome are increasingly common due to prolonged screen time and poor ergonomics. Strain on the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. With proper evaluation and targeted treatment, most cases can be effectively managed without surgery. I can help guide you toward improved posture, reduced discomfort, and long-term relief.”
-Dr. Anatoly Pisman, MD
What is Posture & Tech Neck?
Posture and tech neck refer to strain placed on the neck and upper back from prolonged forward head positioning, often caused by looking down at phones, tablets, or computer screens. Over time, this can place excessive stress on the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the spine, leading to discomfort and reduced mobility.
This condition often overlaps with upper back strain and may contribute to other issues such as muscle imbalance or even disc-related problems like a thoracic herniated disc.
Common Causes
Posture and tech neck are primarily caused by repetitive habits and poor ergonomics:
Key contributors:
- Prolonged use of phones, tablets, and computers
- Forward head posture and slouching
- Poor workstation setup or lack of ergonomic support
- Weakness in core and upper back muscles
These factors place continuous strain on the spine, leading to muscle fatigue and structural stress over time.
Symptoms of Posture & Tech Neck
Symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen with continued screen use or poor posture. Recognizing early signs can help prevent long-term complications.
Typical signs:
- Neck and upper back pain or stiffness
- Headaches related to muscle tension
- Shoulder tightness or discomfort between the shoulder blades
- Reduced range of motion in the neck
If left untreated, symptoms may progress and contribute to chronic pain or nerve irritation.
When to See a Doctor
Medical evaluation is recommended if pain persists, worsens, or begins to interfere with daily activities. Frequent headaches, ongoing stiffness, or difficulty maintaining proper posture may indicate the need for professional care. Early intervention can help prevent chronic issues and improve overall function.
Diagnosis & Testing
Diagnosis begins with an evaluation of posture, movement patterns, and muscle balance. A physical examination helps identify areas of tension, weakness, or misalignment. Imaging is typically not required unless there is concern for structural conditions. In cases involving nerve symptoms, EMG/NCV testing may be used to assess nerve function.
Non-Surgical Treatment Options
Most cases of posture and tech neck can be managed without surgery. Treatment focuses on correcting posture, strengthening supporting muscles, and reducing strain on the spine. Physical therapy and targeted exercises are key components of recovery.
Additional treatments such as trigger point injections may be used to relieve muscle tension and improve comfort. Ergonomic adjustments and activity modification also play an important role in long-term prevention.
What to Expect at Your Visit
During your visit, your posture, daily habits, and symptoms will be carefully evaluated. A physical examination will assess muscle tension, alignment, and range of motion. Based on your findings, a personalized treatment plan will be created to relieve discomfort, improve posture, and prevent recurrence.
