Gait Analysis & Correction

Gait Analysis & Correction

“Gait analysis and correction focuses on evaluating how a person walks to identify abnormalities in movement patterns that may contribute to pain, imbalance, or dysfunction. By assessing biomechanics, posture, and joint mechanics, this approach helps guide treatment plans that may include rehabilitation, orthotic support, and targeted interventions to improve mobility, reduce strain, and enhance overall function.”

-Dr. Anatoly Pisman, MD

What is Gait Analysis & Correction?

Gait analysis is the detailed evaluation of how a person walks, including stride, posture, joint alignment, and coordination. It helps identify inefficiencies or compensatory patterns that may place stress on muscles, joints, ligaments, or nerves.

Correction involves developing a targeted plan to address these findings through rehabilitation, supportive devices, and, when appropriate, interventional treatments. This service is commonly integrated within a broader orthotics & prosthetics (O&P) and joint and soft tissue care approach.

Why Gait Analysis Matters

Abnormal walking patterns can contribute to pain, instability, and long-term joint degeneration. Identifying these issues early allows for more effective treatment and prevention of further complications.

Gait abnormalities may also be associated with neurological conditions or nerve-related issues such as peripheral neuropathy, which can affect sensation, balance, and coordination.

Conditions Evaluated

Gait analysis may be recommended for individuals experiencing:

  • Chronic knee, hip, ankle, or foot pain
  • Difficulty walking or maintaining balance
  • Recurrent lower extremity injuries
  • Post-surgical or post-injury movement limitations
  • Neurological conditions affecting coordination
  • Abnormal posture or limb alignment

In some cases, spinal conditions such as radiculopathy or other nerve-related disorders may contribute to gait abnormalities and require further evaluation.

How Gait Analysis Is Performed

The evaluation involves observing and assessing how a patient walks under clinical conditions. This may include:

  • Step length and symmetry
  • Foot strike and placement
  • Joint motion during movement
  • Postural alignment
  • Balance and coordination

In more detailed assessments, additional tools such as video analysis or biomechanical measurements may be used to better understand movement patterns.

Gait Correction Strategies

Once abnormalities are identified, a personalized treatment plan is developed to improve movement efficiency and reduce pain.

Rehabilitation and Therapy

Physical therapy and targeted exercises may be used to strengthen weak muscles, improve flexibility, and retrain proper walking mechanics.

Orthotic Support

Supportive devices such as custom bracing (orthotics) or other devices from orthotics & prosthetics (O&P) may be recommended to improve alignment and provide stability.

Interventional Treatments

When pain or inflammation contributes to abnormal gait, interventional procedures may be considered, including options within PMR interventional procedures such as:

When Gait Analysis is Recommended

Gait analysis may be appropriate if:

  • You experience persistent pain in the lower extremities or back
  • Walking feels unstable or unbalanced
  • You have recurring injuries related to movement
  • Recovery from injury or surgery is incomplete
  • Neurological or musculoskeletal conditions affect mobility

What to Expect at Your Visit

During your evaluation, your walking pattern, posture, joint movement, and functional abilities will be assessed in detail. A clinical examination will help identify underlying musculoskeletal or neurological factors contributing to abnormal gait.

Based on the findings, a personalized plan will be developed, which may include rehabilitation, orthotic support, and other targeted treatments aimed at improving mobility, reducing pain, and restoring efficient movement patterns.
