Trigger Point Injections

Trigger Point Injections

“Trigger point injections are used to treat areas of tight muscle fibers, commonly referred to as trigger points, that can cause localized pain or referred pain in other parts of the body. These injections help relax the affected muscle, reduce inflammation, and improve range of motion. As part of a PM&R approach, this treatment can be effective for patients experiencing persistent muscle-related pain that has not responded to conservative care.”

-Dr. Anatoly Pisman, MD

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are sensitive, tight areas within muscle tissue that can develop due to overuse, injury, poor posture, or stress. These areas may feel like small knots and can cause pain either locally or in referred patterns to other regions of the body.

Trigger point injections target these specific areas to help release muscle tension and reduce pain associated with myofascial conditions.

Conditions Treated

Trigger point injections are commonly used to address muscle-related pain conditions, including:

How Trigger Point Injections Work

During the procedure, a small needle is inserted directly into the trigger point within the muscle. A local anesthetic, sometimes combined with a small amount of steroid medication, is injected to help relax the muscle and reduce inflammation.

The injection may also mechanically disrupt the tight muscle fibers, allowing the muscle to release and improve blood flow to the area.

When Trigger Point Injections Are Recommended

These injections are often recommended when muscle pain persists despite conservative treatments such as stretching, physical therapy, massage, or medications. They are typically used as part of a broader treatment plan aimed at addressing both symptoms and underlying contributing factors such as posture or repetitive strain.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Patients may experience temporary soreness at the injection site, which usually resolves within a short period. Relief may occur shortly after the procedure or gradually over several days, depending on the individual response.

Most patients are able to return to normal activities soon after treatment, with guidance on activity modification if needed.

Benefits of Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections can provide targeted relief for muscle-related pain:

Key benefits:

  • Direct treatment of tight muscle knots
  • Reduction in localized and referred pain
  • Improved range of motion and flexibility
  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery
  • Can complement physical therapy and rehabilitation

What to Expect at Your Visit

During your visit, your symptoms, physical examination findings, and pain patterns will be evaluated to identify active trigger points. If appropriate, a personalized treatment plan will be developed, which may include trigger point injections along with other therapies to address muscle imbalance, posture, and contributing factors.
