Dermal Fillers- Juvederm for Wrinkle Relief

Posted by on June 6th, 2013

Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD

Dermal fillers are a quick and cost-effective way to fill in hollowed areas, improve the appearance of small scars from acne or soften creases and wrinkles. They are sometimes referred to as “liquid  face lifts”. Dermal fillers are very safe when administered by a professional with experience. I want to help you achieve the results you have dreamed of and deserve”.

-Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD

What are dermal fillers?

As we age, we lose much of the fullness of our skin that we enjoyed in our youth. Dermal fillers, as their name suggests, “fill in” areas of the skin, adding volume where volume is needed. They may be used to plump the lips, add volume under the cheek bones, fill in vertical lines above the upper lip, contour the chin or smooth acne scars.

How do they work?

There are many types of dermal fillers. One of the most popular and widely used is Juvederm, which is composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body in the soft connective tissues. When injected, hyaluronic acid plumps up the area it is injected into, adding volume.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Yes. Dermal fillers are approved by the FDA. Of course, it is wise to choose an experienced provider to inject your dermal filler to reduce possible side effects, such as bruising, redness and swelling. This is not to say that these effects will not occur in the hands of an experienced provider, but these effects can be minimized with good technique.

As an award-winning artist before I became a physician, I have a natural interest in beauty and the preservation of natural beauty. I get immense satisfaction from seeing my patients’ happiness with their improved appearances. Their satisfaction is the best advertisement for my skill as a physician providing dermal fillers and other appearance-enhancing treatments such as Botox. Choosing a provider who has the necessary skill, training and experience is crucial to achieving the results you dream about.

What can I expect at my appointment?

When you come in for your appointment, I will first spend some time talking about what you hope to achieve with your dermal filler treatment. I will then assess your skin and make a plan for treatment. I may make marks on your face to guide me in where to place the injections for best results. I will then clean the areas to be treated with an antiseptic agent. The actual injections take just seconds per site. When I have finished injecting all of the areas we planned, I will wash off any marks made and  give you an ice pack to apply to reduce any swelling or discomfort.

Will it hurt?

Some areas are more tender than others, such as the lips or areas around the lips. I use a topical anesthetic to numb the areas I plan to inject prior to the actual injections. Most patients do not find the procedure painful, but it may be slightly uncomfortable. I go out of my way to inform you about what I am doing before I do it to decrease any anxiety you may be feeling. In my experience, most clients do not find the procedure painful at all.

What should I expect after my treatment?

There may be slight redness or swelling at the site of the injections. Bruising may also occur, most often in patients that are prone to easy bruising. Most patients do not experience any effects except slight redness, which goes away within 24 hours. Some clients go straight back to their daily routine when they leave my office with no one the wiser. You may apply makeup after your treatment as long as you are careful not to rub the sites where the dermal filler was injected.

If you are unhappy with your appearance and have been dreaming about a new, younger looking and rejuvenated appearance, make an appointment to see me in my office. I know you’ll be happy with your results.

Botox (Wrinkle Treatment)

Posted by on June 5th, 2013

Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD

We fight the battle against aging in many ways- through diet, exercise and skin care. Botox can help you maintain a youthful appearance. However, you want to choose the proper professional to administer your Botox. I am an artist as well as a physician, and I view your face as a beautiful canvas in need of minor restoration. Botox can smooth out imperfections such as wrinkles and fine lines, rejuvenating your appearance and making you appear younger and well-rested”.

-Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD

What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin. In very large doses, this toxin can cause paralysis. When diluted and used in tiny amounts, Botox causes  relaxation of the facial muscles they are injected into.

How does Botox work?

Do you have deep furrows between your eyes and at the sides of your mouth? These furrows are caused by repetitive facial movements, such as smiling and frowning. Over the years, the muscle contractions that allow us to make facial expressions leave their mark behind in the form of these deep lines in our faces. When injected into these areas, Botox allows one to weaken these muscles in a controlled fashion.

Is Botox safe?

Yes, Botox is safe. It received approval from the FDA in 2002 for cosmetic use. That being said, you want to choose a professional who is experienced in its use. You have undoubtedly seen pictures of celebrities who appear to have a frozen expression or who seem unable to smile. This is likely due to their having ‘overdone it’, perhaps demanding more and more injections in the hopes that they will appear even younger.

I have training and experience in the use of Botox. I am an award-winning artist in addition to being  an internal medicine physician. As an artist, I have a true appreciation of beauty. Using Botox, I can skillfully enhance your best features while downplaying others. The result? A natural beauty that will make you look younger and totally refreshed, without looking overdone. It’s in my best interests to help my clients achieve a youthful but natural appearance- your appearance is the best advertisement of my aesthetic skills.

What can I expect at an appointment?

When you come in to see me to have Botox injected, we will first discuss what brought you to me. In other words, what are you hoping to achieve? What in particular is bothering you about your appearance? I’ll examine your skin. Following, I will tell you what I believe Botox can do for you. You will have ample opportunity to ask me any questions you may have.

How long does it take?

The actual procedure of injecting Botox takes only minutes. First, I cleanse the area(s) to be injected with an antiseptic. The injections themselves, as mentioned, take only minutes to perform. The discussion of the procedure may take longer than the actual procedure itself!

Does it hurt?

There may be a slight stinging sensation when the needle enters your skin. The sensation is brief and goes away almost immediately. Most people would not describe their Botox experience as painful in any way. Of course, the skill of the person performing the injections influences the pain factor. I can assure you that you will experience very minimal, if any, discomfort during your treatment.

If you have been unhappy with the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles and have been thinking about Botox, make an appointment to come in to see me. Together we will decide if Botox is right for you.

Anti-Aging (Botox and Dermal Fillers)

Posted by on June 5th, 2013

Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MDThese days a growing number of people, including men, are choosing anti-aging strategies to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s always best to have these procedures performed by a professional such as myself because, despite the fact that the risks are minimal, there is a small risk of infection when these procedures are performed incorrectly. If you care about your appearance, you should trust your anti-aging care to a professional”.

-Dr. Bella Zimilevich, MD

Why are so many people opting for anti-aging treatments?

In today’s society, there is a lot of emphasis on how we look. People choose non-surgical anti-aging treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers to reduce the appearance of aging. Particularly in a competitive work world, where jobs can be scarce and no one’s career seems safe, appearing younger can be an advantage. This is why more and more men, in addition to millions of women, are choosing non-surgical procedures such as Botox to improve their appearance.

Non-surgical anti-aging procedures are safer

Non-surgical anti-aging procedures are safer, offering far less down time than surgical options such as face lifts. It is possible to have Botox or dermal fillers and continue on with your day with no one the wiser. There is no need to miss work or hide in your home until bruising and swelling has faded, making these procedures a popular option for people who are busy and can’t afford to take time off for healing from traditional surgery. Botox and dermal fillers offer great results with no down time, no side effects and minimal if no risk when injected by a medical professional.

If you are concerned about possible side effects such as a ‘frozen’ facial expression or an inability to smile, this is why I recommend having the procedure done by a medical professional such as myself. I have professional training as an artist and will treat your face as though it were a precious work of art. I also use the originally formulated and FDA-approved Botox, not the copycats that have come along. I know exactly where to place the injections to maximize your appearance, making you look years younger without making it obvious that you’ve had something done. Unfortunately, some medical doctors provide Botox with no specific training, such as foot doctors. Attending Botox parties is not recommended- allowing someone to inject your face, where important nerves lie just under the surface, who may have little or no medical training or a sterile environment, is always a bad idea.

Non-surgical anti-aging procedures are cheaper

Most people will find the cost of surgical anti-aging procedures such as face lifts cost-prohibitive. Most people simply don’t have extra money put aside for pricey plastic surgery. This is why the popularity of anti-aging procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers has soared in the last decade- these procedures are highly effective and affordable for the average person.

In most cases, insurance will not cover the cost of Botox or dermal fillers for aesthetic/cosmetic purposes (unless Botox is being injected for a medical reason, such as migraine, neck spasms or eyelid spasms). However, at Mill Basin Medical you will find that the cost of Botox injections and/or dermal fillers is quite reasonable and well within the reach of most.

If you are interested in Botox injections or dermal fillers, make an appointment to come in and see me. I can examine the areas that are bothering you and together we can determine whether Botox or dermal fillers are right for you. Unhappy with wrinkles and fine lines? Make an appointment today and discover the Mill Basin difference. If you would like more information about the anti-aging services I provide, please visit www.goodlooksdoctor.com.
